Description: 1950s David Andersen Sterling Silver and Blue Enamel Seahorse Brooch / Pin Marked 925S. The David Andersen Company was founded in 1876 in Christiania, Norway, the city now called Oslo. When David Andersen died, his son Arthur took over and hyphenated his father's name to David-Andersen. This Scandinavian company is known for its high quality elegant silver pieces and exquisite enamel work. A distinctive effect the company is famous for is achieved by a pattern being stamped into the silver and it then shows through the translucent colored enamel. The butterfly jewelry is particularly popular and uses this technique to make the ornate wings appear real by using many multicolored layers of thin enamel. In the 2009 movie, “500 Days of Summer,” Zooey Deschanel’s character Summer Finn accessorized her outfits with similar butterfly pins. Marks from this company include "David-Andersen,” “D-A,” and “INV” for inventor denoting a specific designer. Designers for David-Anderson include Bjorn Sigurd Oster, Synnove Korssjoen, Millie Beherns, Konrad Mehus, and Nora Gulbrandsen. The company still produces flatware and other household items to this day.
